Photo of Black Marlin - page 3 of 3

Black marlin image by artist, Ron Pittard

Below, a spectacular image of a large (estimated at 450 lbs.), acrobatic black marlin. This one was caught just off the the island of Coiba (covered by a near-pristine tropical rainforest) on Panama's Pacific coast. It was photographed in 2000 by Jesper Fohrman. Both black marlin and (seasonally) blue marlin are abundant over the famed Hannibal Bank - a submerged mountain located just off Coiba. Ocean currents that meet the steep sides of Hannibal Bank create upwellings of cold, nutrient-rich bottom water. This produces a huge "bloom" of floating microscopic plants (phytoplankton) that forms the base of the marine food chain. Thus, Hannibal Bank is generally alive with prey species of all sizes, such as squid, small fish and juvenile tunas. This profusion of life creates a magnet for large predators including sailfish, wahoo, dorado (dolphin or mahi mahi), yellowfin tuna well over 200 lbs. (see our yellowfin tuna page for photos of the 225 lb. tuna we caught there in 2000) as well as blue marlin and black marlin - like this monster.

Live Moon Phase Display

Daily "Kill-o-Meter"

Longliners fish most heavily during the periods when the moon is brightest. So, this real-time image of the moon phase shows when the kill of swordfish is greatest and least. It also shows when the kill of blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, sharks, tunas, sea turtles, marine mammals and a host of other marine life is also greatest - even though they are not even targeted. For more, see link above.
